Where does it lead?
Home Up Mathematics and Computer Science Contents Mathematics Computer Science The Joint Degree Where does it lead?
The range of careers followed by our recent graduates is varied. A number of them have gone on to further study, with The choice of doctoral thesis subjects including mathematical modelling (biosensors and the fluid mechanics of foams), algebra (group theory), mathematical logic, artificial intelligence, economics, mathematical physics. A 1985 graduate has recently embarked on a PHD on mediaeval eclesiastical history. More vocational MSc courses have provided a stepping stone into careers in statistics and operational research. A significant number have trained as actuaries and accountants, and many are doing well in other areas of financial services. Those with a degree with a computer science component have almost always followed a career in this area, and some mathematicians have taken up computing too. Nothing seems out of reach: over the past thirty years we have had one of our alumni becoming a winemaster, one a GP, one a childbirth instructor, one training for ministry in the Church of England, and one, when last heard of, earning a living playing pub quiz machines.
