  • Mathematics & Philosophy

Oxford has had a Mathematics & Philosophy degree since 1970. It is an excellent interdisciplinary course for those with the appropriate aptitudes and interests. Only about 20 undergraduates across the University take the course each year, so that few Colleges take more than one undergraduate a year, and some none.  Mathematics & Philosophy undergraduates get to know the rest of the year group through social events and centralised classes, so isolation is not a problem. St Anne's Mathematics & Philosophy students have flourished, though the ability to cycle rapidly between lecture venues in different parts of the city is an asset.

Some students have an interest in philosophy, but elect to take the Mathematical Sciences degree because they want most of their studies to be in mathematics. These undergraduates have the opportunity to include among their 8 papers for the final examinations one or two philosophy papers, and also a mathematics paper on Foundations (Set theory, Logic and Computability). Those mathematicians who have chosen philosophy options have found these rewarding, and have not been seriously impeded by not having studied philosophy earlier in the course.
