Orsay (or Paris Sud) University is
located on a very nice campus in a residential area well
connected to the centre of Paris (half an hour by train, see map
on the web site).
The atmosphere is very quiet with
small buildings surrounded by woods and lawns. Yet it is
generally considered as one of the most active French scientific
universities. The Maths Department is quite renowned. It includes
five teams: topology, algebraic geometry, harmonic analysis,
probability and statistics, and numerical analysis. The library
is also considered as one of the best in France. Computer and
office facilities are good: the building was recently extended.
Some information on the department is available on the web site: www.math.u-psud.fr.
The probability group is small,
but active with a variety of interests: Stochastic dynamical
systems, Branching processes, large deviations, statistical
mechanics, and Markov processes. It has close connections with
some members of the harmonic analysis group (A.Ancona) who are
associated to this program. We also have strong relations with
the statisticians. Some of them are actually working very close
to probability. They maintain an excellent computer service.
The relations with the Laboratoire
de probabilites of Paris 6 are also very active and convenient.
We feel that Orsay can offer a very good opportunity and a
pleasant environment to a post doctoral fellow in probability
especially if he has a rather broad area of interests.

program at Paris Sud.
