Stochastic Analysis and its Applications

Research Fellowships
For availability contact Coordinator

The contract is near its close and there are no positions. However there is a position in Oxford which might be of intererst. Details

Research Fellowships

Following the EU grant of 1.6 M ECU to Stochastic Analysis under Framework IV (ERBF MRX CT96 0075 A), applications are from time to time invited for research fellowships in Stochastic Analysis tenable within the participating research teams of the institutions below; there are currently vacancies in Oxford (two one year positions), Cambridge (one one year position) and Warwick (one one year position):

GB: University of Oxford (Coordinator)
(Imperial College)
(Cambridge University)
(University of Warwick)
DE: Humboldt University, Berlin
Bielefeld University
(Bochum University)
ES: University of Barcelona
FR: University of Paris VI
University of Paris Sud, Orsay
Université Paul Sabatier, Toulouse
(Université de Provence, Marseille)
PT: University of Lisbon
SE: Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm

Who should apply

It is expected that the successful candidates will
  • have a recent PhD in Stochastic Analysis or a related area of mathematics
  • show substantial potential as a research mathematician working in Stochastic Analysis
  • be willing and able to make a significant research contribution to the project as a member of one of the teams in this network
  • be able to take advantage of the very stimulating research environment provided by the network
  • satisfy the eligibility criteria set out below relating to age, residence and nationality imposed by the Commission.

What positions are available

This project draws together some of the best European scientists contributing to Stochastic Analysis, and so involves a number of prestigious Universities. Resources exist to appoint at least one young researcher at each of the institutions mentioned above.

The dates and lengths of appointments are flexible, but most appointments will last 12 months; an appointment could start immediately, but most of the appointments in this round will begin around 1 October 2000. Professor Lyons (Oxford) has additional alternative funding that could, in appropriate cases, be used to extend the positions in Oxford to 2 years in duration or to drop the nationality requirement (subject to work permits).  In total we expect to fund approximately 5 man years of postdoctoral positions.

All appointments dependent on EU funding must terminate on or before the 30th September 2001.

The science

Information of a general scientific nature relating to the project can be found on our home page. Further more detailed scientific information is available on this site, or by following the links to the different teams or by contacting one of the scientists named below (full names and addresses) or by contacting the coordinator:

Application procedure

Successful candidates will be members of the research team of one participating institution (with the opportunity to visit others).

Applicants can apply to several laboratories and should clearly indicate the first preference. Applications and subsequent communications should be sent to each scientist in charge in the institutions where they would like to hold the appointment (See the list below and the full mailing list) and a copy by email to the coordinator Professor Terry Lyons, University of Oxford,
Mathematical Institute,
24-29 St Giles', Oxford OX1 3LB, England, tel: +44 1865 273544, fax: +44 1865 273583, tlyons@maths.ox.ac.uk.
Applications should include full curriculum vitae with age and nationality, list of publications, and a short account of research interests and achievements; it should also include the names and full addresses of three academic referees.

Applicants are required to ask their referees to write directly to each relevant responsible scientist in the institutions where they apply and not to wait for a request.

It is important that anyone interested in the positions makes contact with the relevant scientists as quickly as possible as the individual teams are prepared to consider enquiries at any time. They will be able to tell you of vacancies.

Who to contact

The scientists responsible are listed below with linked information provided about the teams where available. (A table giving full addresses is provided seperately.)

Conditions of appointment

The commission have stipulated that any appointments shall be made in accordance with the internal rules (including pay and conditions) of the Participant concerned and that the visiting researcher will satisfy the eligibilty conditions set out below.

In advance of any appointment being finalised, the host institution and the candidate will be required to draw up and submit to the commission a joint research plan.

The visiting researchers will be expected to contribute actively, effectively, and enthusiastically to the research effort the project through their personal mathematical achievement and more generally, eg. assisting with the writing of scientific reports required by the commission.

Eligibility

The commission have also stipulated that following conditions are satisfied by all visiting researchers appointed to the project:
  • the visiting researcher must be a holder of a doctoral degree or of a degree, obtained from a university or equivalent institution of higher education, which qualifies him to embark on a doctoral degree; and
  • his appointment must be temporary and for a fixed term; and
  • he must be appointed specifically either to carry out research associated with the Project or to assist the Network Coordinator in the scientific coordination of the Project; and
  • he must be a national of a Member State of the Community or of an Associated State (Iceland, Israel, Lichtenstein, Norway); and
  • he must not be a national of the state in which the Participant appointing him is situated and he must not have carried out his normal activities in that state for more than 18 of the 24 months prior to his appointment; and
  • he must not be nor have earlier been an employee having a permanent or indefinite contract with any of the Participants in the Project (this condition does not apply to young researchers).
  • "Young Researcher" refers to a researcher aged 35 years or less at the time of his appointment by a Participant in the frame of this contract. An allowance to this age limit may be made for compulsory military service (the actual time spent in military service) or child care (a maximum of two years per child for the actual time spent off work up to an overall maximum of five years).

It is the intention at this stage that all appointments made to the contract will be of young researchers.

Those holding existing positions

It is appreciated that these positions might be of interest to excellent young researchers who already have, or have been offered permanent appointments elsewhere. The teams would certainly consider appointing a candidate of suitable academic potential, and able to contribute effectively to the research project for a short period (of say 6 or more months), and could provide a grant to cover modest living expenses in lieu of salary. Priority would be given to those young researchers who already show clear excellence, and whose academic training and development would be boosted substantially by the opportunity to spend time in one of the research teams comprising this contract.
